In the recent episode of Jarga Maraka (Debate and Council) the year 2019 was reviewed in the context of radio advocacy and contributions of the Center for Research and Security Studies in this regard.

The first guest in the show, Mr. Inam Ullah Khan, a freelance reporter and journalist, said that CRSS started its efforts to raise voice for the people of tribal areas when there was militancy, especially in Swat, and when people migrated to Mardan and other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa there was a lack of information. CRSS at that time felt the need to fill that gap and prevent miscommunication and work for the rehabilitation of the people. He further said that the themes of Sabawoon changed with the demand of the time and the programs were extended all across KP with main focus on awareness. CRSS is the advocate for marginalized sections e.g. youth, women and other segments of society.

The second guest in the show, Mr. Lihaz Ali, a senior journalist, shared that themes of Sabawoon are focused on solution-based discussion of different situations. He stated that Sabawoon has played a remarkable role in countering extremism.

The third guest on-call, Mr. Tahir Rashid, a freelance reporter from Kohat, shared that in an area like Kohat people mostly rely on the radio as a source of information. The objective of CRSS regarding political and social awareness has been achieved to a great extent and people are becoming aware of their rights.

The report prepared by Afzal Khan Mohmand shared that radio is still an important medium for information and entertainment. CRSS has been in radio advocacy since 2009 for spreading awareness and information of radio listeners mainly focusing on youth, women empowerment and current affairs. It also shared that the objective of Sabawoon is to provide a solution-based platform for discussion on a variety of topics.

The latest episode of Ranra (Light) was dedicated to the role of religious clergy in promotion of inter and intra-faith dialogue for sustainable peace in the region.

The first guest in the show, Mr. Mujahid Khan, a representative of Madrassa Taleem ul Quran, Peshawar, noted that the war on terror has negatively affected people’s minds leading to extremism and intolerance in the society. There is a lack of tolerance and patience which ultimately destroys peace. He emphasized that religious leaders can be an inspiration for others as they have great respect in a society. They can play a key role in peacebuilding and stability through promoting peaceful co-existence and tolerance in sermons.

The second guest in the show, Mr. Zahid Kumar, said that poverty, unemployment, lack of knowledge and ignorance are some of the reasons for intolerant behaviors and sadly, some religious leaders and scholars are also misguiding people and spreading hatred in society. Absence of justice, rule of law and equality is spreading frustration among the masses and destroys peace and security of a society.

The report prepared by Ceena Naeem from Peshawar stated that the absence of peace and tolerance is creating problems as well as presenting a negative image of Pakistan to the world. To promote peace and stability, civil society, media and human rights activists must continue with their efforts.

About Sabawoon:

In the recent episode of Jarga Maraka (Debate and Council) a detailed discussion was carried out on the role and responsibility of democratic institutions e.g. judiciary, executive, legislature and media in a state.

The guest in the show, Mr. Moazum Butt, an advocate, Peshawar High Court, was of the view that for the smooth and successful working of a democratic system, every organ of the state should remain within its jurisdiction. The Constitution of 1973 has remarkably devised a mechanism to help these organs keep a check and balance over one another. He said that people are the main stakeholders who choose their representatives to implement the public mandate. Pakistan is facing challenges because we do not have merit scrutiny when electing our representatives. We need to strengthen our political system by building leadership qualities among our youth.

While talking about the role of judiciary, he said that the most important and effective role is played by the judiciary in Pakistan. It has the power to take a step which is slightly tilted from the Constitution to revive evolution and on need-based ideology. Political parties need to encourage dialogue culture with a vision, leadership capacity and respect for the democratic culture of debate.

The report prepared by Afzal Khan Mohmand shared that the Constitution of Pakistan advocates a clear role for state institutions and to strengthen the state it is a must to practice check and balance system. It also shared that state institutions are playing a positive role to revive and maintain the real essence of democracy in Pakistan.

About Sabawoon:

Sabawoon airs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) since 2011.
In the recent episode of Ranra (Light) a detail discussion was carried out on Article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the challenges faced by working women due to cultural or societal barriers and solution to coup up these issues.

The first guest in the show, Ms. Jaweria Kalsoom, a psychologist, was of the view that although we have some positive examples in our society of working women, conflict still exists in the minds of women on whether to work or not.
In the recent episode of Ranra (Light), Article 23 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was discussed.

The first guest on the show, Mr. Islam Gul, a senior journalist, said that UDHR advocates for no discrimination because both men and women are the pillars of a society. He said that the portrayal of women in media ends up in their objectification. Women working in media are often limited to covering smaller issues. Women should have equal opportunities as men in all fields of work.

The second guest in the show, Ms. Ceena Naeem, a reporter and freelance journalist, was of the opinion that women have the right to work in every field but due to lack of education, awareness and cultural barriers, women feel unconfident to work in fields such as media. Media is partly responsible for all the challenges women are facing because they are presented negatively in showbiz, film and drama.

The report by Abdur Razzaq shared that it is the responsibility of media to provide information and raise awareness and help people form educated opinions. It also shared that objectification of women in media impacts negatively on the lives of the women. It also shared that regulatory authorities need to focus on the issue and strictly follow the mechanisms for monitoring the content and check on all media outlets.

The guest in the show, Mr. Ijaz Khan, Deputy Chief Child Protection, Social Welfare Department, Peshawar, explained that according to the Constitution of Pakistan and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Act, 2010, anyone who is below 18 years of age is a minor. After the 18th Constitutional Amendment, children’s rights protection has been made a provincial subject. He said that it is the basic right of a child to have shelter, food, education and most importantly registration at the time of birth to ensure the provision of all fundamental rights. He further said that we generally lack awareness regarding the rights of children and the result is child labor, street children and child abuse. He shared that the department has initiated centers such as Zamung Kor shelter and a website and helpline 1121 to help orphans or runaway children. He said that child protection committees have been constituted in 26 districts for sensitization on the issue.

The report prepared by Misbah ud Din shared that children are an asset of any nation and Pakistan ranked 154th in child rights provision, which is worrisome. According to a report by Sahil, an 11% increase has been seen in child abuse cases from 2017-2018, with 233 cases reported.

The guest on the show, Mr. Sangeen Khan, an advocate, opined that the history of human rights is long but in 1948, the General Assembly of United Nations introduced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the sole objective of this document was to secure the rights of human beings and a large number of countries owned, adopted and accepted it as a binding document. It is the only document that has been translated in 500 languages. He further said that freedom of expression, right to a fair trial, education, religion and security of every individual are some of the articles of UDHR.

While comparing the UDHR and the Constitution of Pakistan he explained that some of the articles of UDHR have not been implemented in Pakistan because of lack of awareness and cultural barriers. Observing this day is the need of the hour in order to spread awareness. Work is being done as a result of which in 2014, Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa passed a human rights act and a directorate has been established to ensure provision of rights to every citizen. Civil society organizations, judiciary, media and all the other institutions have the biggest role to play to provide marginalized segments e.g. transgender, senior citizens and children with their rights. The government needs to prioritize certain aspects which are connected to human rights e.g. food, and shelter to all citizens.

The report prepared by Afzal Khan Mohmand shared that humans are entitled to basic rights irrespective of their gender, race or religion. UDHR and Constitution of every state ensures it.

Three calls were received during the show.

The latest episode of Ranra (Light) discussed the right to health. World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 to raise awareness about AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.

The guest in the show, Dr. Atta Ullah, a representative from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Reforms Unit, noted that most of the HIV infected persons in Pakistan are either not aware of the illness or they do not disclose it thus they can more easily spread the virus. While sharing the figures, he added that approximately 5,432 patients of HIV are registered with HIV/AIDS Control Program Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, out of which 3,944 are males and 1,235 are females, while 226 are children. Punjab has the largest number of patients with over 60,000 people living with the infection. In KP 16,000 persons are said to be infected. Drug abusers and transgender people are at high risk in Pakistan. There is a dire need to fight against this stigma and encourage the patients to get treatment.

The report by Inam Ullah shared that AIDS cannot be cured but through medicines it is manageable. According to reports by the United Nations, 37 million people are suffering from HIV/AIDS worldwide and Pakistan is the top Asian country in terms of the most number of HIV patients. The report by Ceena Naeem stated that as the population of Pakistan is not health conscious, an awareness campaign should be launched.
