On, 12 december, 2017, I ( Ayesha Izhar Chaudhri) conducted a post practicum activity in the resource room of the English department, U.O.S. The Session started at 11:00 am and ended at 12:30 pm. The session was attended by the senior students of the English department.
The one and half hour session had following three phases
1) WARMING UP
An informal discussion about prevalent gender issues was initiated as a warming up gesture. The aim was to draw the attention of the audience towards sensitive topics of Gender imbalance in in society.
During the warming up session, basic questions were written on the white board. Students were highly encouraged to ponder and think about basic human rights.
- The basic idea of human rights is that each one of us, no matter who we are or where we are born, is entitled to the same basic rights and freedoms.
- What exactly are the basic human rights? Who gets to pick them? Who enforces them— and how?
- Why are women considered inferior to men?
- Are men also put at a disadvantage ?
2) GENDER INEQUALITY AND DISCRIMINATION SURVEY
The questionnaire was designed to equip students with basic information about Gender inequality.
The pictures of the questionnaire are provided below:

3) DISCUSSION (AFTER SURVEY)
- Gender stereotypes are preconceived ideas whereby females and males are arbitrarily assigned characteristics and roles determined and limited by their gender.
- Gender stereotyping can limit the development of the natural talents and abilities of girls and boys, women and men, as well as their educational and professional experiences and life opportunities in general. Stereotypes are used to justify and maintain the historical relations of power of men over women as well as sexist attitudes that hold back the advancement of women
- Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are critical to building stable, democratic societies.
CONCLUSION
It is the first ever workshop conducted in our department. Students felt motivated. Many believed that it was for the first time that gender related issues were discussed in the classroom. I feel that such workshops can provide people an opportunity to think out of the box. Overall the session was very productive and I feel more such workshops should be conducted at regular intervals
